Everyone who wants to visit Bhutan must obtain a visa and make travel arrangements through a Bhutanese tour operator or one of their foreign partners (with the exception of travelers with Indian, Bangladeshi, and Maldivian passports). The Ngultrum is Bhutan’s currency (Nu.) As legal tender in the nation, it is equivalent to the Indian rupee. In Bhutan, INR (Indian Rupees) are not now accepted in amounts of 500 and 1000. Money can be withdrawn using a Visa or MasterCard from ATMs that are present in each of Bhutan’s major towns. The majority of hotels and gift shops accept credit card payments, and POS (Point of Sale) facilities are offered around the country.
All travelers to Bhutan, with the exception of those from India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives, require a visa.
A valid passport with a minimum remaining validity of six months is required for Indian, Bangladeshi, and Maldivian nationals to get visas at the port of entry. Indian nationals may alternatively use their Voters Identity Card (VIC). Prior to visiting Bhutan, all other visitors are required to acquire a visa clearance. Your authorized Bhutanese tour operator can apply for visas directly or through a foreign travel agency using an internet system. Your tour operator will apply for your visa after receiving the photo page of your passport. Once the complete money has been received, the Department of Tourism will process the visa. The processing of the visa clearance after receipt will take 72 working hours. Your visa clearance letter must be presented at the point of entry, where it will be stamped into your passport.
The $200 per day (January, February, June, July, August) and $250 per day (March, April, May, September, October, November) package includes a minimum of 3 star accommodations, costs for food, an experienced guide and transportation within the country. Also included in the price is a $65 per day Sustainable Development Fee that goes towards free education, free healthcare and poverty alleviation. All of these services will be arranged by your tour operator.
The most distinctive characteristic of Bhutanese cuisine is its spiciness. Chillies are an essential part of nearly every dish and are considered so important that most Bhutanese people would not enjoy a meal that is not spicy. Rice forms staple Bhutanese diet. It is accompanied by one or two side dishes consisting of meat or vegetables. Pork, beef and chicken are consumed most often. A wide selection of western and Indian food is also available in many of the restaurants around the country.
All International tourists wishing to enter Bhutan require a visa which must be pre-arranged through a license Bhutanese Tour Operator or one of their international partners. Visa clearance must be obtained through your tour operator prior to travel. For Indian passport (or VIC) holders, Bangladeshi nationals and persons from the Maldives may obtain a visa on entry.
